A Minecraft Birthday

I’m pretty sure I hit my birthday party decorating peak last year with Leighton’s Harry Potter Birthday, but I think this year’s theme turned out pretty good.  Leighton decided she wanted a Minecraft birthday months ago like in the middle of spring she declared that her party would be Minecraft and there was no changing her mind.   So, of course, I turned to Pinterest for all the inspiration.  Since everything in Minecraft is made up of squares, I thought making the decorations would be easy…. boy was I wrong.  Even though each item in Minecraft is a square, each square is made up of tiny squares in different colored shades, so the grass is like five shades of green, not just one shade of green.   I’m not even sure how many hours I spent painting two-inch squares on poster board different shades of green, brown and grey.  But it was all worth it when I saw how much Leighton loved everything!  Also, I am renting a bounce house for every party, I was shocked at how excited Leighton was for it and how much everyone used it.

Here is a short description of how I made the different items and where I got the supplies from-

Balloon Arch: Balloons are from Amazon.

9 Balloon: The balloon is from Walmart.

Happy Birthday Leighton Poster: The poster board is from the Dollar Tree and for the letters, I used this site to print them out.

Happy Birthday Leighton Banner/Wall: I used black poster board from the Dollar Tree, cut into rectangles and glued on printed off letters that I created by using the “Minecraft” font that I downloaded in word.  I got the templet for the green Minecraft banner here.   All the Minecraft characters were found by googling for Leighton’s favorite Minecraft characters and printing them out.

Minecraft World Wall:  Poster boards are from Dollar Tree and Joann’s.  I painted the rock, dirt, and grass by creating a two-inch by two-inch grid and painting random squares different colors.  For the rock, I used three different shades of grey and white paint.  For the dirt, I used four different shades of brown and grey paint. For the grass, I used three different shades of green and grey paint.  I found all the Minecraft characters and clouds by googling and then printed them out and glued them on.

Generating World Poster: White poster board is from Dollar Tree, printed out the 9 from here and the Minecraft wording here, other Minecraft images are from google and all the text is from made by using the Minecraft font in word.

Nether Portal: Sign is black poster board from the Dollar Tree, with cutout letters made from the Minecraft font in word.  Purple streamers and the purple tablecloth behind it are both from the Dollar Tree.

“Grass” Vases: Green and brown Paper Shred Filler from the Dollar Tree.

Outdoor Decorations: Tissue garlands are from Dollar Tree.

Birthday Cake: The cake is from Costco, we added red frosting to the top and red sugar glitter.  The TNT sign is actually paper stuck on with frosting and I added a few of Leighton’s Minecraft figures.
